I know I speak for many when I welcome 2010 hoping it is filled with more fortunate times than was 2009.  Layoffs, record unemployment, closures, you name it – and it happened in 09.

The Future Looks Bright or Does it?

My glass is always half full, so I tend to paint the brighter picture, or as you may say, I look through primrose glasses. Our industry suffered immensely last year, but indicators are showing that things are beginning to turn in the manufacturing sector and in many cases in the staffing industry.

Here are some quotes from The American Staffing Association’s monthly report for December:

Demand for temporary and contract staffing continued to increase steadily from November to December, according to the ASA Staffing Index. The index began the monthly period, starting the week of Nov. 9, at a level of 85 and ended the five week period 2% higher at its current value of 87.

Temporary help employment has increased 23% since the beginning of July and the average number of staffing jobs reported for the month of December is comparable to the number of industry jobs reported for the same five weeks in 2008.

No matter—half full or half empty—the numbers above look positive. And in the past few months all of our offices have seen an upswing in new orders.
